Under the supervision of the Dept. of Mental Health, the Massachusetts Mental Health Center and its predecessors have been responsible for providing residential and outpatient care and treatment for mentally ill persons--prior to 1967 specializing in acute psychotic disorders and since then serving more generally the Boston metropolitan area. The outpatient department, known as the Southard Clinic since the mid-1940s, was the site of psychometric examinations administered by the hospital's psychological laboratory (also known as the Dept. of Psychology). Tests were given to persons referred by staff, private physicians, or the Dept. of Mental Health to determine general intelligence level and other psychological characteristics. Summary test results were recorded in these index card files.
